Everyone sees the world differently. Our brains process information in complex ways affected not only by the reality around us, but by our individual sensory processing, our experiences and our expectations. Through his art and movies, David Warren Preston offers a chance to open your eyes to an alternative view of the world.
"Most people are bored, living their lives with their heads down. People are afraid, their opinions are squelched. That's a shame. I like to get people thinking, scare them a little. I want to crack people's illusions and maybe create new ones. I break people loose from complacency. That can make people a bit uncomfortable." David
Born in Japan, where his father served in the navy, David grew up mostly near San Diego, California before relocating to the Bay Area in 1989 after college. Following a career as an environmental consultant, David traveled and then returned to school to get a degree in city and transportation planning.
A severe brain injury changed his plans. David found himself victimized as much by the broken health care system and inept and uncaring police as by the unknown robbers who assaulted him. He reemerged with his vision of the world forever altered. Extensive rehabilitation and the casual callousness of the world to all victims added to his discontent and restlessness. David turned to film making and art as a way to give voice to anger, disillusionment and bitterness. He found himself also somehow capturing the beauty of life. His work reveals an intelligent and surprising idealism.
"It's worth sticking around just to see what happens." Bob Forrest, The Bicycle Thief
